It symbolizes europe’s European idea of community and cohesion. I am proud that with Bad Kissingen we now have a total of nine World Heritage Sites in the Free State,” congratulated bernd Sibler, Bavarian State Minister for Science and the Arts.
“Great Spas” – a successful European project Great Spas of Europe: These are eleven spa towns from seven nations – Bad Kissingen, Baden-Baden and Bad Ems in Germany, Karlovy Vary, Mariánské Lázně and Františkovy Lázně in the Czech Republic, Spa in Belgium, Vichy in France, Baden bei Wien in Austria, Montecatini Terme in Italy and Bath in the United Kingdom. The “Great Spas of Europe” are testimony to the European spa phenomenon and the exchange of innovative ideas with influence on spa towns and balneology between 1700 and 1930. Their importance for the international community is recognized in a special way with the designation as a World Heritage Site.
Bad Kissingen acts as a prime example of a world bath in its top shape at the beginning of the 20th century. It is also the only spa town in the applicant group that has salt extraction and medical brine applications in its service portfolio. The interplay of material and intangible heritage manifests itself in an exemplary manner for the application in Bad Kissingen using the example of the Upper Saline, which for years was the spa residence and temporary seat of government of Reich Chancellor Otto von Bismarck.

Numerous special events, activities, guided tours and concerts are planned around the designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. For more information, see www.badkissingen.de/welterbe.
